Designing for journalist efficiency and speed; promoting reader interactions
Schibsted Media
Schibsted Media is a leading media destination in the Nordics, owning independent brands that are part of people´s everyday life. Each day almost 7 million Swedes and Norwegians interact with them. Schibsted Media include such well-known brands like Aftonbladet, Svenska Dagbladet, Omni, Podme, VG and others.
Live News & Comments
Belonging to "Interact" team in Shared Platform and Products organisation at Schibsted Media I look into designing for comment and live news frameworks being used across different newspaper brands in Sweden and Norway.
I also design for the journalist "Live" content management tool where they create and manage live news updates and share it with readers, be it an election rally, Eurovision concert or just chat about a Christmas tree.
Work tasks
My tasks include organising and facilitating workshops, preparing, conducting and analysing interviews and usability tests, creating user flows, sketching and prototyping.
Projects
Some of the projects I have been involved in at "Interact":
-
Live CMS - continuously updating Live CMS to make it quicker and more efficient to work with for journalists, e.g. being able to manage (search, edit and add) photos directly in the liveblogs; easily browse and find relevant news to post from the external news feeds; create clear Setting block to manage all the live blog related setting in the same place
-
Live studios - working on updating existing live studio themes and creating new ones; developing new features e.g. key events - where the reader can get a quick overview of the recent most important news in the news flow
-
Comments - designing comment notification centre to keep the readers updated about their comment activities and make them more involved in interaction and discussion; creating a compact view for comments in order to keep discussions running
PROJECT - Key events in live studios
Goal
Explore the ideas of how readers can be informed about the most important events in the live studio without diving deep into all the post written since his last visit. Test out how those events should be presented and how reader should be navigated to those events.
Processes
Pen & paper sketches --> First digital draft + Prototyping --> Discussion with the team --> Usability testing online (both visuals and interactions) --> Updating the sketches
I usually start working with pen & paper sketches where I can easily and quickly explore the initial ideas.

After that I moved to Figma and created first digital sketches of different options and prototypes that I could share with my team to get the feedback and explore the technical opportunities and limitations. And also test the updated versions with users via "Lyssna" online testing platform - both the visuals and interactions.

Outcomes and deliverables
After gathering user feedback I analysed the collected data and based on that did another round of more refined sketches ready for the development for live studio themes with the timeline and without, also the sketches of mobile and desktop views (with the detailed visuals and explanations of the logics, rules and interactions).
The feature was developed and released, being used by several newspaper brands both in Norway and Sweden (here is an example of the final version of the mobile view of the live studio with the timeline).
